| چکیده [English] | ||
| Extended Abstract Introduction With the rapid expansion of cities, the focus on physical development has often overshadowed the importance of environmental quality and the identity of urban places. This trend has weakened the sense of place and diminished the emotional connection between citizens and urban spaces. Sense of place plays a vital role in enhancing spatial quality and user experience in urban environments. Sense of place is a key factor in improving quality of life, preserving cultural values, and enhancing the experience of tourists. This study, focusing on the historical-cultural Zandieh Complex in Shiraz, aims to identify the factors contributing to the formation and strengthening of sense of place, offering practical strategies for improving urban spaces. The analysis is grounded in the perceptions and experiences of users and is conducted through qualitative methods. The research addresses two central questions: (1) What are the key factors influencing the reinforcement of sense of place? (2) What role does sense of place play in shaping the interaction of citizens and tourists with the Zandieh Complex? The findings aim to inform urban design policy, preserve place identity, and enhance environmental quality. Methodology This applied study adopts a qualitative approach to explore how citizens and tourists perceive and emotionally engage with the Zandieh Complex. Data were collected through an online survey and analyzed using thematic analysis with MAXQDA software. The study sample included 61 participants who provided 138 responses, categorized into functional components (land use, spatial form, accessibility) and experiential-aesthetic components (objective and subjective landscapes). The analysis yielded 20 primary codes, 18 of which related to urban design qualities, while 2 referred to challenges such as lack of amenities and a sense of insecurity. This structured analysis helped identify patterns, themes, and indicators that influence spatial quality and supports informed decision-making in urban planning and design. The results offer a clearer understanding of the factors shaping the quality of public spaces and may contribute to strengthening sense of place and enhancing lived experiences in historic urban environments. Results and discussion The study employed visual charts and data tables generated via MAXQDA to support the qualitative analysis of survey responses about the Zandieh Complex. The results were organized under five main systems: physical structure, land use, accessibility, objective landscape, and subjective landscape. Key components identified as enhancing sense of place included accessibility, functional diversity, safety, legibility, memory, and identity. Spaces such as Vakil Bazaar received the highest satisfaction due to thoughtful design, cohesive lighting, and multifunctionality, while areas like Nazar Garden or the entrance of Karim Khan’s Citadel underperformed due to weak visual appeal and lack of inviting features. Other challenges included inadequate maintenance, lack of amenities, and a sense of insecurity. The research recommends enhancing spatial legibility, functional flexibility, lighting, and cultural programming to transform the complex into a vibrant and identity-rich environment for both citizens and tourists. Compared to previous studies, this research aligns with existing literature on the influence of functional and aesthetic components on sense of place and emotional attachment. However, its distinctive contribution lies in its deeper analysis of functional dynamism, spatial invitingness, nighttime lighting, and multifunctional use, dimensions less directly addressed in prior studies. Additionally, the study emphasizes the role of environmental design and spatial relationships in fostering social interactions and a sense of belonging within a historic setting, offering a new perspective in the analysis of sense of place in heritage and tourism contexts. Conclusion This research investigated the role of sense of place in urban spaces and its impact on tourist experiences, using the Zandieh Complex in Shiraz as a case study. The findings underscore that sense of place is a multidimensional concept shaped by both functional factors (e.g., accessibility, land-use diversity, spatial coherence) and aesthetic-emotional components (e.g., memory, identity, subjective and objective landscape). Data analysis using MAXQDA revealed that spaces like Vakil Bazaar and Karim Khan’s Citadel are more successful in evoking sense of place due to appropriate design and diverse uses. Conversely, weak lighting, insufficient amenities, and poor restoration emerged as barriers. The study suggests that reinforcing sense of place requires simultaneous attention to physical, emotional, cultural, and historical dimensions. Measures such as improved environmental design, development of green spaces, diversified functions, and cultural events can enhance tourist experiences and improve residents’ quality of life. The study emphasizes the importance of preserving and strengthening sense of place in historic urban settings. Strategies such as architectural restoration, identity-oriented design interventions, and cultural programming are recommended to promote sustainable tourism and enrich both visitor experience and urban quality. | ||
