Studying world architectural trends of the current century can be quite enlightening in the summation of contradictions and drawbacks inherent in the direction this art has taken. Modernism, along with new construction technologies, new sociological orders and theories, and a general atmosphere towards rationalism appeared in the twentieth century. “Modern” architecture and Modernism are inherent in the western apporoach; the manifestations of which are seemingly apparant worldwide. In this article and in direct relation to the foregoing, I will address the importance of an independent style of expression closely connected with the indigenous cultures in those Islamic countries who strive to safeguard their unique heritage and identity.
