| یافته‌های علوم شناختی به نحو روزافزونی نشان می‌دهند که تمثیل‌ها و استعاره‌ها نقشی اساسی در شناخت انسان بازی می‌کنند. دانشمندان نیز از این قاعده مستثنی نیستند و بنا بر این استعاره‌ها و تمثیل‌ها در علم نیز نقشی اساسی دارند. هرچند فیلسوفان علم چند دهه‌ای است که به این نقش پرداخته‌اند اما مورخان علم، با ذکر چند استثنا در چند سال اخیر، این نقش را نادیده گرفته‌اند. دعوی نوشتۀ حاضر این است که جدی گرفتن نقش تمثیل‌ها و استعاره‌ها در تاریخ علم نگاه نوینی را به گذشته می‌گشاید. به عنوان نمونه‌ای از این نحو تاریخ‌نگاری پس از اشاره‌ای به کار یکی از مورخان حاضر که این نحوۀ تاریخ‌نگاری را به کار گرفته است اشاره‌ای جرئی‌نگرانه‌تر به بخش کوچکی از کار داروین جوان خواهد شد. سپس برهمین مبنا از این نظر دفاع خواهد شد که فهم گذشته تنها با نگاه امروزین ممکن است و ترس از تاریخ‌نگاری به سبک ویگی تنها مانعی بر فهم گذشته فراهم می‌کند. و در انتها از این نگاه دفاع می‌شود که با اتخاذ چنین نگاهی راه برای استفاده از تاریخ علم برای برساختن برخی فرضیه‌ها در علم رایج باز می‌شود. | ||

| The findings of cognitive science increasingly show that analogies and metaphors play an essential role in human cognition. Scientists are no exception to this rule, and so analogies and metaphors play a fundamental role in science. Although the philosophers of science have been studying the role of analogies and metaphors in science for decades, historians of science have ignored this role- with a few exceptions in the last few years. The claim of this paper is putting emphasis on this role opens up a new look in historiography of science. After referring to the work of one of the present historians who uses this method of historiography as an example, a small part of young Darwin's work will be reconstructed. Then, on this basis, it will be defended that understanding of the past is possible only with the contemporary look, and the fear of committing Whigish historiography is only a barrier to understanding the past. In the end, it is defended that this kind of historiography can help the scientist in offering new hypotheses in current scientific debates. | ||
